Shania's NEW Album "UP!" will be released on November 12th in North America, International TBA (expect November 11 or 18)... Shania's first radio single is due September 23 (North America). No word yet on other formats, streaming, the video, or international release, but a multi-format first single simplifies promo & marketing, and makes sense for this album. August 12, 2002: It's official - Shania will release her new album "UP!", November 12, 2002 in North America (international date(s) TBA, expect November 11 or 18). The album includes 19 new songs, all co-written by Shania and her husband/producer R.J. "Mutt" Lange. "UP!" is Shania's first new album since 1997's record-shattering "Come On Over." That album is the best-selling release of the SoundScan era, top selling country album, and the best-selling album ever by a female artist in the U.S., at a staggering 19 million units. "Come On Over" has sold 35 million copies worldwide.
Shania's NEW Album is tentatively due November 12th or 19th (North America),
and November 18 (International). The working title for the album is "Up"...
Shania's first radio single is targeted for September 23 (North America). No
word yet on other formats, streaming, the video, or international release, but a
multi-format first single simplifies promo & marketing, and makes sense for
this album.
July 1, 2002: Album Notes - labels always reiterate that
their preliminary release dates are "subject to change" - true up to a
point. Shania's album release date has to be "locked" by the end of
August (some retailers and Universal divisions already have these current
release dates in their databases)... The glut of 4th quarter releases from the
other major labels plus (too many poorly scheduled) competing releases within
Universal add to the confusion and games being played here. (Peter Gabriel's
album with the same title is also due this year, which her management and label
are well aware of). These are verified target dates, and while they may be
moved/tweaked, release months are accurate, and any changes should be within a
week or two... Hopefully conglomerate Vivendi's escalating corporate meltdown
won't further cloud the music division's ability to perform for Shania.
June
28, 2002: Shania's label has still not "publically" confirmed the 9/23
radio date, but numerous radio stations and several entertainment outlets are
now reporting it. Many radio stations use the same news feeds and simply
regurgitate stories... Only a few major-market stations actually "checked,"
but they are reputable. Someone may have leaked this (possibly to gauge
interest), but it's odd it took ten days for country news to pick up on it, and
most mainstream media still have not.
June 18, 2002: September 23 was
first announced as the new Shania single radio date by a fill-in DJ at a PA
radio station, and has since also been "reported" by a few other
stations... This date is not yet confirmed by her label, but should end up being
accurate within a week of actual. The label also needs time for retail single
release, usually 2-4 weeks later. So the timeframe is about right, but it's a
little early for the single date before the album. Expect more definitive
confirmation on the album & single by July. Album release target remains
November.
June 12, 2002: Shania's album release target remains "late fall"
2002 (by November), with first single by September. Whether a single or
double-CD album is still unconfirmed (estimates range from 19 to 20-plus album
tracks). If album length runs under 100 minutes, a double-CD would hurt sales,
so editing to a "full" single-CD is the logical option, perhaps with
some exclusive retail singles (ref. pricing Note). Whether UMG plans (or has
data-space for) Enhanced CD features is unknown. For audiophile fans, a SACD
release is almost certain (DVD-audio TBA/unknown).
Clarification - It is still not known whether Shania will be able to
visit Timmins for a public "re-dedication event" at the Shania Centre
in calendar 2002. Until her new album is finished, she won't know her schedule
for the remainder of this year, so an annoucement of public appearances is not
due until later this fall. Shania is expected to be back (with a new single) in
time for the CMA Awards on November 6, 2002. By then Timmins weather is winter
brisk and white, and though she may visit family and friends privately later
this year, Shania's next "announced" Timmins appearance will most
likely be her return for another hometown mega-concert, as part of her next tour
(start-of-tour timeframe guesstimate is summer 2003)...
June 7, 2002:
After her album is released this fall, Shania's hometown of Timmins is hoping
she will be able to visit the Shania Twain Centre during her promotional tour.
Will Saari, Shania Twain Centre/Gold Mine Tour tourism and attractions manager,
went on record with this "hint" from her management: "Last year
with starting a new family and recording, she was unable to visit the centre.
But we have been in contact with her management and we have been told that early
this fall will be the release date of her record. Then she will have her
promotional schedule set and we expect that she will be able to visit the Centre
around that time."... Mr. Saari was partially misquoted (above) by a local
Timmins reporter and asked for a correction. City of Timmins officials continue
discussions with Shania's management regarding a visit to the Centre, but no
confirmation is expected for several more months.
While it still depends on Shania's schedule, her trip will be
announced far enough in advance to allow preparation time for the special "welcome
home" event, and so that many North American and International fans who
want to attend will have time to book their trips to Timmins. With the latest
Centre upgrades and exhibit rennovations, 2002 is a terrific time to visit the
Centre, and the city hopes many long-distance fans can make Timmins an annual
travel destination.
June 3, 2002: Shania's label Mercury again confirmed the obvious
without adding any new information. The release of Shania's new album is
scheduled for "later this Fall with a single released to radio prior to the
album." Still no dates have been set, but as soon as they are you'll know.
They did add: "Thanks so much for your patience. The wait is almost over!"
May 20, 2002: As reported several months ago, Shania and Mutt had
already written 20 plus tracks, and a 2-CD set appeared possible. Though not
officially confirmed yet by her sub-label Mercury, word is that a 2-CD release
is now expected "by November," with her first single 8-12 weeks
earlier, as reported previously. With a nearly concurrent release of both North
American & International versions, look for her first single(s) to country
and pop radio around late August - late September... Hope to have firm album and
single(s) confirmation sometime in June.
If true, the label needs to be very careful how they market and price
a new double album... especially in light of the recent exorbitant signing of a
certain act to her own "self-promotion" label by parent Universal.
There needs to be a contractual marketing budget and incentive pricing to ensure
(for the first time ever) a proper Shania album release... and a double CD must
be 100 minutes or her sales will actually be hurt. See pricing Note.
April 28, 2002: Shania's new album was highlighted as one of the major
releases slated for 2002 at the Vivendi Universal annual shareholder meeting in
Paris, France.
April 16, 2002: A close friend of Shania's is in town on business and
to visit with the webmaster this week. More confirmation that Shania plans to
have her new album out "by the end of this year" (but no more specific
than that). They are close friends, but she's just Eilleen, never "Shania"...
Their conversations are confidential, and tend to be more about new mom concerns
lately. Happy to report that baby Eja, mom and dad are all doing just fine.
April 12, 2002: The Universal Music Group CEO has confirmed Shania's
new album is officially on the label's 2002 release schedule
(Mercury/Universal)... No further news about an exact release date yet. Target
remains September-November. The release month should be known soon: current
educated guesstimate is late October/early November, preceded by the first
single(s) several months earlier.
March 20, 2002: The top executive at Universal Music International has
officially confirmed the target release of Shania's new album in 2002. There are
a lot of subleties in planning final release dates, but it appears the label
will aim for (close to) a "world" release of two versions of the new
album. Most international fans should see the album shortly after the North
American release, though perhaps later in some smaller markets.
March 1, 2002: Confirming news first reported here last December and
reiterated again several weeks ago, word has finally come from Shania's label as
to the status of her new 2002 album. Mercury Nashville label head Luke Lewis has
confirmed Shania and Mutt are planning to surpass the quality of her last two
albums, which is hard to comprehend. The material recorded so far for the new
album is even stronger than what she's done before. Along with essential "Eja
time," Shania and Mutt continue to work full out on the album and will have
even more material than for "Come On Over" (1 hour/16 tracks),
approaching enough for a 2-CD set/20 tracks (though probably not that many will
end up on the final album). There is still no firm release date, but the target
window remains September-November. The label hopes for September, but emphasizes
that no date can be fixed yet: "Shania and Mutt won't deliver the album
until they're sure they have topped themselves, so it could be Fall or Christmas
or some other date."
February 20, 2002: Since the birth of Shania's baby, her label has
continued to hedge and remains unable to confirm a release date/month, though
her new studio CD is still to be released in 2002. It is unfortunate that so
many rumors continue to propagate, but also understandable due to fans'
impatience at the excruciatingly long wait for this album. As policy, this site
avoids any hint of rumor, gossip, or innuendo... however sometimes the subject
or nature of a rumor makes it wiser to address rather than to ignore it
altogether (i.e. her management's/label's more recent approach). While there is
no official album release date, certain expectations have now become reasonable:
With both North American and International versions being tracked and mixed for
a "world" release (as noted a year ago), the CMAs moved to November 7
(along with more subtle award eligibility considerations), and most superstar
releases targeted for the 4th quarter retail boost, unconfirmed but "probable"
indicators now point to a September-November album window, with first single
8-12 weeks earlier. An official date and album details will be provided as soon
as available.
Comment: One other factor recalls the failure by her
label to initially promote "Come On Over" (or ship first week stock).
Shania exited the scene as the biggest selling artist in music, with the #1
selling album ever by a female and by any artist in the past decade - yet
neither "The Woman In Me" (#5 peak) nor "Come On Over" (#2
peak) ever reached #1 on the US pop album charts (though of course both set
longevity records at #1 on the country charts and for top 20 pop). In light of
her extended absence, insistence on privacy and aversion to promotion, her label
will have to be very careful in selecting a release date, and actually be
willing to market up-front this time to ensure Shania's pop chart debut. The
industry and astute fans know what her new album's first week numbers should be.
October 18, 2001: Shania's label has confirmed the target release
window for her new studio album is now "summer" 2002, pushed back from
spring, which was the official estimate prior to the birth of Shania's baby
(ref. "Congratulations!" It's a Boy!)... In the meantime, for serious
fans in need of a Shania music fix, "The Complete Limelight Sessions"
(released October 23) is a new album of early pre-fame "demo"
recordings from 1989/90 released by the producer. It demonstrates Shania's still
formative, raw talents in more of a late 80's rock style. While of notably
lesser quality than her exceptional mega-selling major label albums of the 90s,
it is a listenable CD for collectors. For more info see Shania's Music.
